MORE villages in the Test Valley are on the brink of taking up MP Sir George Young’s advice and banding together to buy their own speed indicator device.

In November Hurstbourne Tarrant, Vernham Dean and Tangley clubbed together and now it is the turn of Shipton Bellinger, Over Wallop, Penton Grafton and Grateley.

Each parish has a variety of concerns about traffic speeding through their villages – often by drivers who have no business in the villages seeking a short cut.

There will be an initial outlay of £2,000 per village plus ongoing maintenance costs and for that each village will have the sign for two weeks every eight weeks.

The signs tell drivers that they are travelling too fast and are most effective if they are in place for no longer than two weeks at a time, councillors have been told.

When he officially opened the first sign on the A343 Sir George highlighted the need for them in the light of the statistics which showed a total of 460 child casualties on Hampshire roads in 2006, with around 10 per cent of them in Test Valley.
