The race for the Wessex League first division title was effectively reduced by two last night as Cowes Sports went down by the only goal at Fleet Spurs. The islanders still have a game in hand but can only reach 65 points if they win at Stockbridge on Saturday and Ringwood Town on Wednesday, which is the final fixture in the league.
Team Solent did themselves no harm at the same time as they won 2-1 at fifth placed Petersfield United to go above Whitchurch United into second place with 64 points but they cannot finish any higher than runners up as they can only reach 67 if they win at Pewsey Vale on Saturday. Whitchurch and Brock both have a far superior goal difference going into tonight’s games as the Jamboys entertain Ringwood Town while Brock are home to East Cowes Vics.
Whitchurch are hoping for a good attendance tonight as they enter the final week of what has already been an excellent season. They have reached the North Hants Senior Cup Final, losing to treble winning Alresford Town and have the Andover League Open Cup Final as a campaign closer next Wednesday.
All this leads to Saturday’s crunch game at Grigg Lane where the title could be on the line as Brock play Whitchurch at 3pm.
A full match report will show here on tonight’s games around 10.30pm
