Andover Lawn tennis Club’s mixed team are sweeping all before them at the moment. Claire Reid as captain has managed a three-match winning streak, the last two being 8-0 wins.
At Andover’s Balksbury home, recently visited by the LTA president to honour Coach Bash Kara, they did well to beat visitors Old Basing.
Claire Coomer and Andrew Winnett, who first won the Andover mixed doubles championship as teenagers, used their skill and understanding to win both rounds; 7-5,6-3 and 6-3,6-1.
Another experienced player, Anthony Brown, was paired with Flavia Zamfir, a very promising Junior and they powered their way to win both rounds also; 6-1,7-5 and 6-1,6-0.
In 30 degree heat the team (pictured) then played some excellent tennis against a determined Totally Tennis team in Basingstoke.
Winnett and Coomer played first pair and with their usual consistent placement and skill managed a solid victory over both pairings. Coomer’s cool approach and steady manner led to some excellent points being won, whilst Winnett’s overhead smashes put many points to rest.
Gregor and Claire complemented each other’s style of play with Gregor’s footwork leading to some really unforgettable retrieving.
Coomer and Winnett won their matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1. Corcoran and Reid won by 6-0,6-0 and 6-0,6-2.This was a match that was closer than the scores suggest.
It will be interesting to see if they can extend their winning streak to the end of the season. The omens look good.
