I AM able to throw some light on the interesting letter in the Andover Advertiser of 28 May.
Jane’s gravestone is situated precisely opposite the spot where once stood the office of the Commandant of the RAF Staff College, Andover. The first Commandant of the college was Air Commodore Robert Brooke-Popham for whom my father-in-law, Philip Dowling, worked. A photograph is attached showing the first course held at the new establishment in 1922 with Jane taking pride of place with the Air Commodore!
Others will perhaps be in touch to validate this account. My interest in the matter was sharpened when the old Staff College buildings were demolished to make way for modern infrastructure. I served with the college between 1957 and 1962 and it was heartening to see that Jane’s headstone was respected.
