Travelling back from Newbury on Monday, August 26 at around 6.30pm, my parter and I approached Countess Roundabout at Amesbury on the A303, relieved that there was very little traffic going in either direction, even though it was a Bank Holiday.
But as we drove over the hill towards Stonehenge Bottom, we saw something completely different.
A huge pile up of traffic travelling eastwards, proceeding at snail's pace, for no apparent reason
As we drew level with the head of this column, we saw that it was led by two black suv"s, one behind the other, so that no one could overtake.
It seemed that both vehicles were deliberately maintaining a top speed of no more than 10mph, for no other reason than to slow down all traffic behind.
The tailback, as we later saw for ourselves, lasted all the way to up over the downs the other side of Winterbourne Stoke
Was this some sort of stunt, designed to create bad publicity for the loss of the Stonehenge tunnel scheme, even though a new scheme hasn't been presented yet?
Or have other reports of 'bottlenecks' on the A303, been 'artificially constructed' in like manner? It certainly looked like a deliberate and formidable traffic violation.
